The Triple Helix Executive Management Team (EMT) is the group of student and alumni leaders that oversees daily chapter and international operations for The Triple Helix Inc.
Jennifer Ong graduated in March 2011 from the University of California, San Diego with a B.S. in Biology and minor in Communications. Her first article for The Triple Helix, “Deep Brain Stimulation, A Quest for Cognitive Enhancement” was selected as the cover article for the Fall 2008 Science in Society Review. As a result of her work for The Triple Helix, Jen has conducted research on the effects of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation for bipolar patients for the UC Davis Medical Center, and co-authored an article on teenage brain development for Scientific American. She soon took on the role of Editor-in-Chief for the UCSD chapter, and later joined the International Editorial Board as a Senior Literary Editor. In 2010, she helped organize the annual TTH Conference and Leadership Summit, hosted by the UCSD chapter. As COO of North America 2010-2011, she developed The Triple Helix’s first online subscription platform, expanded to new chapters within the US, initiated the first TTH high school division, built an alumni network to involve graduate school members, and coordinated the 2011 TTH Conference and Leadership Summit. She returns to TTH International as Chief Executive Officer for the 2011-2012 year to help The Triple Helix Inc become a standard throughout the world of what students can accomplish given a little idea and a lot of passion. Jacob will graduate from the University of Chicago in June 2011 with a B.S. in Biological Chemistry and a B.A. in Chemistry. He joined the Triple Helix as an Associate Editor in Spring 2009, and proceeded to write for the print journal the following two cycles. He also took on the role of E-Publishing Director at Chicago in Spring 2009, and continued these duties while also serving as a Senior E-Publishing Editor through the 2011 academic year. He returns to TTH as the Chief of Global Affairs for the 2011-2012 year. As CGA, he hopes to further TTH’s global presence through project development and execution on an international scale. Outside of TTH, Jacob’s research interests lie in using materials science and mass spectrometry to study post-translational modifications. He also enjoys interviewing prospective undergraduates with the admissions office and volunteering at the University of Chicago Medical Center. Chief Operating Officer, North America Mridula is a sophomore studying Biological Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. She became involved in the Triple Helix in her freshman year as an editor and soon rose to become the Editor-in-Chief. She now brings that same drive and energy to the Executive Management Team. As the COO of North America, Mridula is continuing to expand on some nascent initiatives including growing the TTH high school division, helping build an alumni network, and coordinating the 2012 TTH Conference and Leadership Summit. In addition, she is working to develop a series of guides to assist new chapters, develop a mentorship program for chapters, and in the long term, build a TTH-sponsored program that encourages research and education to promote discussion on the role of science in society. Mridula is currently pursuing neuroscience research to correlate gene expression with function, and works as an Academic Counselor on campus, assisting students to achieve their academic goals. Francesca Day is in her second year studying Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge, specializing in physics. She became involved with The Triple Helix as Outreach Director and then President of the Cambridge Chapter in her first year, as well as by contributing as a writer. As COO Europe, Francesca is working on expanding TTH to other European universities, and represents the current and future European chapters to the EMT. Outside of her work with The Triple Helix, Francesca continues to take part in public science outreach projects, and in scientific research. You Chuen is a student at the National University of Singapore, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. He is currently pursuing the degrees of Bachelor in Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (M.B.B.S.). He has been involved with TTH since freshman year, starting out as a Corporate Business Associate. As the current COO of Asia, You Chuen is working to set-up other Asian chapters in India, China and Vietnam to name a few. Madeleine Chan is a fifth year combined Bachelor of Commerce (marketing) and Laws student at the University of Melbourne. She joined the Triple Helix as a Marketing Officer in 2009 and subsequently became the 2011 President. Her main area of interest is in marketing and has launched several marketing initiatives at the Melbourne chapter. She strongly believes in the power of marketing and feels it can be used in an effective yet ethical manner. Although Madeleine is not a science student, she is curious about the legal and commercial applications of neuroscience, such as neuromarketing and whether neuroscientific techniques should be used in criminal trials. She is expecting to graduate in December 2011, and hopes to pursue a career in marketing. Outside of The Triple Helix, she enjoys playing tennis, practicing Bikram yoga, and watching musical theater. Robert Qi joined the Harvard chapter of The Triple Helix in fall 2009 as an Associate Editor. He was the Editor-in-Chief of Harvard Triple Helix and a Senior Literary Editor of the International Editorial Board from fall 2010 through spring 2011, and he represented Harvard at the 2011 Triple Helix Conference and poster session in Washington D.C. As Chief Financial Officer, his role includes providing revenue for and advising from a financial perspective on all international Triple Helix operations, as well as ensuring chapters can meet their fiscal needs. Some of his other activities include partaking in the Harvard Financial Analyst Club and Franklin Teen Mentoring and researching the retinal synaptic connectivity of red-colorblind zebrafish. Robert also enjoys debating economic and foreign policy, running, cooking, and nightclub dancing in his spare time. He plans to graduate in 2012 with a B.A. in Molecular and Cellular Biology. Manisha Kaura founded the Ohio State chapter of The Triple Helix in the fall of 2010, and currently serves as its President. She represented Ohio State at the February 2011 American Academy for the Advancement of Science Poster Session and joined the Executive Management Team as Chief Marketing Officer in April 2011. She is working to expand public relations and international marketing efforts. On campus, she conducts sociology research on social stratification and operations research on the functional distribution of power in governmental agencies. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling, learning new languages, managing the startup e-learning company she founded in high school and training for the United States Open Swing Dance Championship. She anticipates graduating from Ohio State in 2014 with a B.A. in Sociology and Portuguese, a minor in Modern Languages, and a M.S. in Industrial and Systems Engineering. Darwin Chan Darwin Chan is a junior at Cornell University and is currently majoring in Biological Sciences with a minor in East Asian Studies. He got involved with the Triple Helix organization beginning in his second year as part of the production team at Cornell University, an initiative compelled by his general interest in design. In assuming the role of Chief Production Officer, Darwin hopes to make Triple Helix production the best that it can be, as well as create a fun and exciting environment for new and existing production editors. Dhruba Banerjee is a third year at UC Berkeley, double majoring in Cognitive Science and Molecular and Cellular Biology. His interest is in the intersection of psychology and biology, and he frequently get into debates regarding the fascinating ideas in these fields. In fact, his original interest in The Triple Helix stems from how these scientific theories have large scale implications about how we think about humanity and function as a society. Prior to his role as Executive Editor in Chief, he served as Senior Literary Editor for the National University of Singapore and University of California, San Diego. Zain Pasha is a Senior at Cornell University, a Meinig Family Cornell National Scholar (as well as Vice President of Operations), a Cornell Irwin and Joan Jacobs Scholar, and a member of Pi Sigma Alpha Political Science Honor Society. He founded the electronic publication division of The Triple Helix Inc (and the Triple Helix Online), first at the Cornell Chapter, then internationally as the Executive Editor in Chief, E-publishing. Zain now directs the entire electronic publishing operation for the organization across all chapters and directs (and implements) all web design and web marketing for the Triple Helix Online. When not working for The Triple Helix, Zain spends his time debating as Vice President of the nationally 5th ranked Cornell varsity debate team, researching (currently) nuclear weapons proliferation and international political economy, coaching high school debate, and working out. Zain’s research has been featured in The Research Paper, Cornell’s premiere magazine for undergraduate research, and he is currently working on two papers that will be published later this year. One of his papers looks at the use of torture by the U.S. and systematically determines whether it is in the U.S. national interest. His other paper, which he is co-authoring with one of his professors, looks at the domestic distributional effects of credible military threats and their impact a state’s decision to develop nuclear weapons. Zain is also a syndicated writer for The Bleacher Report, one of the top online sources for sports news and a writer for Georgetown University’s policy blog Global Solver. Outside of academia, Zain has spent several years working in the private sector as a software engineering intern and as a Deloitte Sophomore Summer Scholar and a Summer Scholar. Jennifer Yang graduated from UC Berkeley in 2010 with a B.A. in Molecular and Cell Biology, specializing in Neurobiology, as well as a Minor in English. Jen was the Executive Director of Internal Affairs for TTH International from 2009-2010, directing the planning committee for The Triple Helix Annual Meeting in San Diego, CA in February 2010 and developing the first internal resource site. Previously, Jen was the Chapter Production Head for TTH at UC Berkeley from 2008-2009, where she co-founded a DeCal course and created production training materials. She is returning as EDIA to establish a sustainable alumni network and provide internal consulting. Outside of TTH, Jennifer is on the Advisory Board for Team HBV Collegiate, an outreach sector of the Asian Liver Center, and the Jade Ribbon Campaign, which promotes global Hepatitis B awareness and education. She is currently working at the UCSD School of Medicine as a research associate studying the potential for neurotrophic factor gene delivery in clinical therapies for Alzheimer’s disease under Dr. Mark H. Faisal Rahimi is currently a senior at The George Washington University, Columbian College of Arts and Sciences. He became involved in The Triple Helix as the Co-Founding President of The George Washington University Chapter in September 2010. He helped organize the annual TTH Conference and Leadership Summit 2011, hosted by the George Washington University chapter. As the Executive Director of Science Policy, he is working to build a sustainable framework for the Science Policy Division as well as promoting science cafes internationally to showcase the diverse voices of this global forum for science and society. On campus, Faisal partakes in leadership opportunities to better service The George Washington community. He is the Founding President of the George Washington University Research Organization and the Founding President of the George Washington Afghan Student Association. Currently, he enjoys conducting Microbiology research with Dr. David Morris and clinical research in the Department of Emergency Medicine under Assistant Professors of Emergency Medicine Jeremy Brown and Neal Sikka.
