Defining TTH – How Do You Explain TTH to Public?

Presenters: Bharat Kilaru, CEO and Jennifer Ong, COO North America

The Triple Helix is an international non-profit organization that focuses on the intersection of science, society, and law — Phew, that’s a mouthful! Pinpointing what TTH is all about in a nutshell is always something that we all have struggled with, so this discussion will highlight some ways in which you can explain to your friends, family, and the world.

Thank you, time has elapsed. It was a great and productive discussion. Some key points of takeaway

  • TTH is a forum for exploration of interdisciplinary issues
  • TTH is a way for us to connect science and laymen
  • TTH is a way for us to create awareness of the the way in which disparate issues connect

Thanks!

How will many of us use the TTH in our future lives?

  • Involved in the research side of things
  • Involved in the policy side of things – TTH is the only thing that really exists to talk about policy side of issues

More and more fields are about policy experience, and applications.

Issues come out of people studying science in society…time is focused on subtle and small issues; fixing calendar issues, etc.

TTH is great because it lets students explore their opinions, and commit to a major that will encompass their interests.

We shouldn’t need translators between science and policy. Explain work to the regular person, so that they can be empowered to make decisions for themselves.

High appreciation for TTH, pushes that towards something that everyone understands. Science, political science, economics etc.

Jacob Parzen, SEE: Science vs. Laymen – TTH is a compromise between those two parties. There is a fundamental disparity there, to connect everyone together.  Against the idea that TTH is on the side of “can I publish my research” that compromises the essence of any good article. You need to make things palatable for the broad audience.

The process for understanding TTH

1) Interest and definition

2) How I explore this topic (e.g., as a staff writer, editor, science policy guru, etc?)

3) That’s it. Produce.

At first glance that it seems that TTH is just another one of the many extra-curriculars that we do, but TTH is totally different.

Bharat’s Brand Statement: TTH is an opportunity to address issues that you would otherwise not be able to address.  Not just about research, TTH will force you to interrogate the “so what” element of the things that you are working on. It is great that people have the opportunity to do research…but there is very little opportunity to address the same science in a public sector.

Jen’s Brand Statement: International non-profit that focuses on issues at the intersection of science, society and law, and TTH does this through electronic publishing, print journal and science policy.

Julia: TTH can publish external articles and internal articles that allows us to do several things concurrently. Science in society is a very unbounded issue, and this gives TTH a leg up on what we can and can’t do. Science is more than just changing science and society, about changing society itself. Choose to have the journal, online and science policy, you can do different things different times.

One forum you target specific audiences, others you target others.  You get a truly global forum…we don’t have to make a choice necessarily

We have to be clear about…how does interest in science affect society at large. Not something that is already being handled in the world.

How does a student decide how to practically use those interests? What’s going ot happen, and how can they decide how to do this?

Students will say….

Can I publish my research in TTH? The answer is, quite frankly, No!There is already a strong forum for student research and students take those opportunity to publish in these intense settings.

We want to address something that students didn’t already have access to.
