  • 5:34 PM: David Edwards Look at me! I’m blogging! No hands!

  • 5:36 PM: David Edwards There are some technical difficulties, meaning technically the difficulties are getting handled. Julia’s improvising.

  • 5:38 PM: David Edwards Introduction: Not chapter perspective, but International perspective. Think horizontally, not vertically. Communication between them. Open positions. Present annual report and annual plan. (Really important for comments/feedback.) Talk about communication management, because we need improving that. Oh, and Kalil Abdullah is speaking. He’s on the Board of Directors at Cleveland Clinic and doing a whole bunch of cool medical stuff.

  • 5:40 PM: David Edwards What is EMT? (Not an emergency medical technician…or an enormous mouse tail.) PowerPoint presentation will be up, but for now: EMT = Executive Management Team. Entirely undergrads. Lots of positions and stuff. Will be discussed later. Lots of acronyms.

  • 5:41 PM: David Edwards What is IEB? International Editorial Board. Bharat is part of that, minus goatee. Whole idea: lit.

  • 5:41 PM: David Edwards Central: does production. It, along with IEB, is a subset of the EMT. So many acronyms…

  • 5:42 PM: Zain Pasha Hey Everyone! Zain here again. Sitting in on the annual plan.

  • 5:42 PM: David Edwards Oh goodness, another one: B+M (Business and Marketing team). Different type of board. Designed for International, not chapter. Trying to change structure of board because people don’t understand.

  • 5:43 PM: David Edwards E-publishing board. Zain runs (because he’s cool). All editors-in-chief are part of that, too. Publishes stuff, uh, online.

  • 5:43 PM: David Edwards Scipol: Science Policy. Again, another International position, not chapter position. Stop thinking chapter positions. Stop it.

  • 5:44 PM: Zain Pasha The E-publishing board has monthly meetings to discuss the future of the e-publishing division

  • 5:44 PM: David Edwards Oh, and everything I mentioned was under the umbrella of the EMT

  • 5:45 PM: Zain Pasha EMT has boards – and the boards work under the EMT – which are horizontally organized at the same level

  • 5:46 PM: Zain Pasha and when I say boards, they are not chalk boards or white boards (like the one that Julia is writing on) its a group of people that make decisions

  • 5:46 PM: David Edwards Everyone needs to understand how International works. Diagrams will get passed out soon. Okay, EMT has a whole bunch of International boards, then have regional boards, then have chapter boards. Boards are horizontal, but divisions are vertical. Think rows and columns.

  • 5:48 PM: David Edwards RMT: designed for regions (North America, Asia, Austraila, and Europe); at least one chapter in each region — many in North America — and had staff just for that region; recently, this model doesn’t hold well for student organizations; but we’re bringing it back! (RMT: the new black.)

  • 5:48 PM: Mira RMT fills in space between chapters and international.

  • 5:48 PM: Zain Pasha TTH has several chapters both within the US and internationally – they are bringing back the RMT to make chapter and international operations seamless

  • 5:48 PM: Zain Pasha RMT = Regional Management Team

  • 5:49 PM: Zain Pasha RMT is comprised of Chief Operating Officers of each region (COO)

  • 5:49 PM: David Edwards RMT: consists of COO (Chief Operating Officer) of each region, new position: Executive Director of Chapter Operations (different from Chapter Operating Officer), designed to be in close contact with individual chapter presidents.

  • 5:51 PM: David Edwards Most important element: every president sits on RMT board because each chapter has different structures and different strengths/weaknesses. RMT will facilitate things for everybody (think ‘We Are the World’).

  • 5:52 PM: David Edwards RMT Meetings: once a cycle; discuss annual plan, problems, etc.; optional meetings between EDCO and COO and other chapter presidents with problems; ooh, chapter president is only local and international member. Dual citizenship, baby!

  • 5:53 PM: David Edwards All information is already on resource site. Slides will be sent out and posted. Diagrams will be made for this new structure.

  • 5:53 PM: David Edwards RMT meeting: find something other than Skype to use. Pilot meeting in Fall went well.

  • 5:55 PM: Mira New development: keeping more contact with chapter presidents–giving them int’l roles as well as chapter roles.

  • 5:55 PM: David Edwards Don’t want people sitting on bunch of boards. (What about longboards?) But want informal round-table discussions to address specific problems. Would be voluntary, but you will want help if you’re struggling. And good chapters will want to show off. That means you, Cambridge.

  • 6:06 PM: David Edwards Website: trying to consolidate and migrate website; this section is internal, so should be hosted on a different website. (Also, database crashes associated with putting this content on main page.) And alumni contact page, too, to maintain network. Poster sessions, for example, can be posted here.

  • 6:11 PM: David Edwards Slide1: Idenity is personal, academic, and professional. Now, job people know all this. They will Google you before looking at your resume. And Kalil made a dating joke. It was funny.

  • 6:15 PM: David Edwards Slide2: Business model. Not modeled like academic institutions. ________ __ _________ with ________. Operation model has changed dramatically because of the Internet. Everyone has access now, and the Internet has great capabilities. E.g., advertising isn’t all posters now because TTH identity is online (through Google).

  • 6:17 PM: David Edwards Slide 3: 92 is average number of days since last website update. Unacceptable. Why aren’t we updating this more? We should be updating this more, because you attract freshman to your group. Remember, your website is the face of your organization.

  • 6:19 PM: David Edwards Slide4: Branding. The brand of businesses are important. Visual consistency: need logo, font, etc. People should recognize Triple Helix by seeing the logo and font. We have done a bad job of making stable presence of TTH. We’re fixing that, but we need more fixing. I’m sorry, Kalil.

  • 6:22 PM: David Edwards Slide5: Social Networking. GOOGLE, along with Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Don’t publicize your Facebook account because you will be passed over consideration. Get your bad pictures off the web, along with monitoring your blog posts. Have GoogleNews alert to show when your name is searched, or your organization. Manage this stuff. It’s important.

  • 6:24 PM: David Edwards Slide6: That’s it. But you will be Googled. Seriously. In 2007, 40% business executives had searched for applicants online. Don’t suck at your personal profile and make sure you have everything reigned in. Google yourself. (Great last line!)

  • 6:26 PM: David Edwards Slide7: Alumni Reporting. Keep a document alumni contact information. This is our strongest tool because this is what Triple Helix can do for you. Individual success is the success of our organization. We’re going to have an alumni database soon. And we always have really advanced people working for us. Kalil will vouch for us. We put in a lot of work (insert self-congratulatory pat here), so keep up the good work!

  • 6:27 PM: David Edwards Julia’s taking the floor about the Annual Report and Annual Plan. (It comes in Poor Richard’s Almanack format. It will be sunny in exactly three months.)
