Business and Marketing
Description: The business aspect of TTH is the least on the radar, but it is essential to how we function as a non-profit organization. Come discuss changes international and chapters can make on branding and marketing TTH when looking for funding, or looking for resources. How do we market what we do in this low economy? What exactly needs to be done in business/marketing for an undergraduate organization like TTH?

- 2:11 PM: Daniel M. Choi Business and Marketing… oops, Julia’s phone went off.
- 2:12 PM: Daniel M. Choi Introductions…
- 2:13 PM: Daniel M. Choi We see a lot of changes going around in titles, but we need a strong business infrastructure to help chapters out–mostly to do with AAAS costs.
- 2:15 PM: Daniel M. Choi Goals: Annual Budget (We have not used an international budget before);
We have *some* money at internationals–we have *some* funds at the international level; Remember, most of the f - 2:15 PM: Daniel M. Choi unding is by chapter
- 2:15 PM: Daniel M. Choi Joint-Advertising Program–Look at the Resource Site
- 2:19 PM: Daniel M. Choi What happens at JAP: 1. Opt-in/Opt-Out form (most chapters have asked for it) with advertisement types available, etc. 2. List is given to advertisers–more advertising chapters = more discount
Run through International–money is spread out through the chapters–International takes a small cut (7~10%)
Finder’s fee–30% cut of the final - 2:21 PM: Daniel M. Choi JAP is for the print–E-pub is more difficult
- 2:22 PM: Daniel M. Choi Question: Do we want to have each chapter have a marketing team
Answer: Depends on chapter, but we want to encourage it and we are formalizing on an international level in order to make it sleek and smooth. - 2:22 PM: Daniel M. Choi We now want PR and Marketing as clear positions.
- 2:24 PM: Daniel M. Choi Lauren’s suggestion: get grad schools etc. to do ads
- 2:25 PM: Daniel M. Choi What is the price system?
Anshul has the details, but currently they are set in US prices–It’s why Cambridge has opted out so far - 2:27 PM: Daniel M. Choi Julia on phone once again–Printing issues with Alex.
- 2:29 PM: Daniel M. Choi Q: Scaling chapter funding based on chapter size?
A: We’ll look at the annual report and decide - 2:32 PM: Daniel M. Choi Strategy Now…
- 2:33 PM: Daniel M. Choi (P.S. Skype is awesome for behind-the-scenes organizing)
- 2:33 PM: Daniel M. Choi Lauren: Pick 3 or 4 specific categories to focus on
Ad hoc is okay for chapters, but we need a structure for international - 2:35 PM: Daniel M. Choi Jen: Chapters don’t have the resources and don’t have the experience for advertisers, so having some information/guidance from the International Level would be very helpful
- 2:36 PM: Daniel M. Choi We have our content in the Resource Site (Google Site) so we just need to organize it
- 2:37 PM: Daniel M. Choi Marketing kit: Cover Letter, Info Packet
- 2:43 PM: Daniel M. Choi Legalities–with BOD
- 2:44 PM: Jennifer Yang A point about marketing: getting the right rhetoric that is continuous among all chapters
- 2:45 PM: Daniel M. Choi Discussion re: Separating Business and Marketing
- 2:45 PM: Jennifer Yang this will be in more detail at the international portion of the conference this afternoon
- 2:46 PM: Daniel M. Choi Advertising contracts–big need for legal team
- 2:48 PM: Jennifer Yang Marketing: some concepts I wanted to bring up about branding in marketing: narrowing the scope, highlighting experience in accommodating a particular audience, consistent wording, credibility, differentiation from other orgs, coordination among all levels within the internal org
- 2:57 PM: Daniel M. Choi Our current system of licensing is too restrictive–but we should prolly look into Creative Licensing
- 3:00 PM: Daniel M. Choi Also–what about Public Relations vs Marketing?
- 3:01 PM: Jennifer Yang I think PR’s a subcategory of marketing. I think of PR in its most literal form
- 3:01 PM: Jennifer Yang but marketing is often misunderstood as JUST PR which is not the case. it also includes the prep work before the PR, what people actually see
- 3:02 PM: Daniel M. Choi While that is intuitively true, I think Lauren is talking about actual departments
\ - 3:02 PM: Daniel M. Choi within the international structure
- 3:02 PM: Jennifer Yang the list I made previously with the components of marketing comes from my previous advisor for another club I’m in — biz major haha
- 3:02 PM: Jennifer Yang Oh, I see. How would you run them differently?
- 3:02 PM: Jennifer Yang (just keeping some records on live blogging)
- 3:03 PM: Daniel M. Choi I think the whole PR aspect is more of how to manage the organization’s message
- 3:03 PM: Daniel M. Choi within the organization in particular
- 3:03 PM: Daniel M. Choi but we can discuss this in more detail with Lauren
- 3:05 PM: Jennifer Yang I agree. It’s definitely more needed especially with increasing our scope in the org
- 3:08 PM: TTHEpub Are you all done with this session?
